So let’s look at our Motherland today from an unusual angle — through the prism of numbers. After all, behind every statistical indicator lie amazing facts, the scale of which simply astonishes the imagination.
Area of Russia – 17 151 442 sq km. That’s a full 11% of the planet’s land.
Population: 143.4 million people (as of early 2026).
Natural resources. Russia is a world leader in reserves of gas and titanium, diamonds and nickel. As for rare‑earth metals – we rank 7th in the world with 28.4 million tonnes.
Languages. 277 languages and dialects are spoken in Russia. In 2026 the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences officially counted 155 living languages (!). Of these, 105 are represented in the education system.
Confessions. More than 70 different confessions (from Orthodoxy – 65% of Russians, to Islam, Buddhism, Judaism and the traditional beliefs of indigenous peoples), 34 223 officially registered religious organizations.
Peoples. Representatives of over 190 peoples live in Russia. At the same time, more than 40 peoples are recognized as small‑numbered, and the state carefully preserves their unique cultures.
By the way, 2026 was officially declared the “Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia”.
Time. Russia spans 11 time zones!
Climate. Four climatic zones: Arctic, sub‑Arctic, temperate and subtropical.
🔥 And Russia also has the deepest lake in the world (Baikal – 1 642 m), the longest railway in the world (the Trans‑Siberian Railway – 9 288.2 km), the tallest educational building (the main building of Moscow State University – 240 m) and the largest fortress in the world (the Moscow Kremlin – 2 235 m)!
